This site is your collaborative space for Span250, Civilización de España (Instructor: Dr. Kevin Gaugler). You will be adding content to the course as the semester progresses. Each student must contribute a minimum of 4 new pages of 500 words each and edit 1000 words of your peers (words not written by you). In addition, one can earn 5 extra points on an upcoming exams by adding 5 annotated photos, 5 annotated videos, 5 annotated links and 5 comments on 5 different pages (pages not written by you). All contributions must be an honest effort to help the class understand important aspects of Spain.

The following chart outlines the dates and point values for required assignments. Please refer to your syllabus for the due dates of each assignment. Late submissions will result in a loss of 10% of the assignment's points for each 24 hour period of tardiness.
An additional 1000 points for each student will be awarded based on the overall quality of the CivWiki site. Overall quality will be graded based on the overall organization, grammar and content of the wiki as well as the growth in site visits, the number and quality of the comments by outsiders and the time spent by outsiders at the site.
The following chart outlines the dates and point values optional assignments. You will need to submit a list of the 15 items and on which page they are located on the day of the exam in order to receive points.

Please use the following criteria when writing a page:
- Essays should be original work written in your own words with proper acknowledgment from where one obtains information. Since this is a website one may link to another's website and mention the source in your essay. Any work that is presented as your own and is not will result in an F for the assignment or the course or even expulsion from the college.
- Essays should be on topics that you feel one needs to know regarding Spain and its cultures. This is an opportunity for the class, as a team, to develop an on-line textbook on Spain. The empty pages listed under "Navigation" are meant to get you started. Feel free to add a new page at any time. This is your space to build upon as a class.
- Be sure to tag your pages with keywords that will make it easier for others to find your information.
- When researching your topic remember that the library subscribes to the Sunday edition of El País. You may also want to explore electronic information sources that may be useful such as Marist's FoxHunt, El País, ABC, El Mundo, 20 Minutos or Google.Noticias. For more cultural information you may want to visit the site of the Instituto Cervantes or use print resources in the library. A good essay should include a minimum of three different sources. Be sure to include references that indicate from where you obtained information. Failure to do so could be interpreted as a form of plagiarism.
- Be sure to be mindful of your privacy and not include any personal information. You might give your username to your instructor only so that he/she is the only person besides you that can link your essay to you.
- Although these directions are written in English for clarity, all essays will be written in Spanish. If you need assistance adding accents and spellchecking in Spanish here are a few suggestions:
- I find the best way to deal with accents within webpages is to download the FireFox browser and install the ZombieKeys extension. ZombieKeys will allow you to add accents into these textboxes as if you were using the same keystroke combinations for Microsoft Word. Next, be sure to install the Google Toolbar. The Toolbar has a built-in spellchecking feature in several languages, including Spanish. You can change the default language by clicking on the small arrow to the right of the button.
- Of course, you can always just use do it the old fashioned way with the following key combinations on your number keypad. Windows allows the user to type any available character by holding down one of the Alt keys while typing in a numeric code on the numeric keypad. For example, to type the long dash — such as those used surrounding this clause — hold down the Alt key while typing 0151 on the numeric keypad. Here is a chart showing the combinations you're most likely to need when typing Spanish:
Numeric keypad method
á Alt + 0225
Á Alt + 0193
é Alt + 0233
É Alt + 0201
í Alt + 0237

ü Alt + 0252
Ü Alt + 0220
¿ Alt + 0191
¡ Alt + 0161

» Alt + 0187 - If you are using Internet Explorer you can also spellcheck in several languages simply by downloading the GoogleToolbar and clicking on the spellcheck button. You can change the default language by clicking on the small arrow to the right of the button.
Please use the following criteria when editing someone else's page:
- You may change any grammar, spelling or content in an essay. You may also add to any essay to make it a more complete or accurate essay.
- Keep in mind that all changes are logged by the system. However, be sure to keep a copy of your original essay since once you submit your work it may be edited by anyone in the class.
- Once the deadline for the 500-word essay has passed, changes made to your own work will not count toward total word changes. You can change your essay if you wish, but you will still need to change 250 words of your peers.

No me había dado cuenta de que era una web para los alumnos de un curso. Os felicito por la iniciativa.
